room in the inn?

i'm officially homeless. a transient vagabond bum. well, i do have an apartment to move in to, it will just take a week to get to it. so in the meantime, i'm mouching off family and staying in hotels. a week from today, we'll be up to our eyeballs in boxes in the new place. hooray and merry christmas to everyone!

the tally is mostly success

thirteen things i wanted to accomplish this fall (week #18)

happy winter soltice. did everyone remember to sleep extra long since its the longest night of the year? i didn't. i have a head cold and that makes for tossing and turning. i posted this list in september. its all the things i wanted to get done. i've done most, er, some. the update is in ( ).

these are in no particular order of importance or schedule

1. organize all my recipies, they are scattered on postits and emails and pages ripped out from magazines. i have one of those make your own cookbook books and have been meaning to get it all organized for a while. now is the time.
(this didn't really get done. i did at least collect all of them and stick them in the same pile, so progress was made)

2. finish personal address book. this is almost as bad as the recipes. i just need to get it all into outlook or excel or something i don't even care what but all in one place. (this one was completely unsuccessful. maybe in the new year...)

3. organize the craft supplies and craft projects. i have a couple of plastic tubs of crafty things and then a whole lot of crafty things that won't fit. so i need to buy a couple more tubs and get it all squared away. (hooray, an out and out success, albeit from last week)

4. secure enough walkathon prizes. the walkathon is going to happen whether i accomplish this or not, but i'd rather i got this done. it would just be nicer all around if everyone got a prize. (we had prizes left over, i was pleased)

5. remember to write thank you notes for walkathon sponsors. i think handwritten thank you notes are the most amazing thing and since no one else in the world does this, it carries an amazing weight. but at the same time, its a lot of time and work, so we'll see. (i made some calls. not quite the same, so half success)

6. figure out what to do: lease is up in october (we went month to month and are moving tomorrow)

7. probably move, hopefully just within this complex, either way, andrew should be moving in so that counts as a move too (yup, moving to vegas tomorrow)

8. finish one non fiction book (i finished james frey's book. i know, not exactly non fiction. i think its currently billed as 'non fiction with embellishments' so i'm counting this as a success)

9. attend all possible Room in the Inn meetings, a homeless program i'm involved in (i did not attend them all, but i dropped off my food dishes and other items to support the program)

10. my job feels very up in the air at the moment and while i have no control of the company's decisions, i want to find the best possible solution for me and mine (i interviewed elsewhere but in the end stayed with my company, which is why we are moving. its going to be choas though. my office is going from 6 to 2 with more work not less. )

11. i want to knit something. i tried to start knitting a couple years back and never did much. i'd like to finish that potholder. (didn't even bother with this one. maybe in the spring)

12. i'm really hit or miss with excercising. one or the other: i want to either break it to my inner self that i'm a lazy couch potato or finally get into a real excercise habit. (i did excersize, but only some)

13. i like to try a new recipe every couple of weeks. but andrew is home now and he is a much, MUCH less adventurous eater/cooker than i. so, i'd still like to try new things, about every other week, but i want to try new and different things that i think he'd like. this could either end up rather boring or with hedious deaths. (we tried some new casseroles and i think it worked out nicely)

hunting and gathering

thirteen things about apartment hunting and moving cross country
week #17

1. apartment hunting is both harder and easier from 2500 miles away

2. i am completely amazed at the information you can find online and how vastly different a place can be from their website. the pictures are often miraculously better than reality.

3. apartment personel are always smiling, they always laugh at your jokes, they usually compliment you on your earrings, shoes, hair, etc.

4. before i owned a washer and dryer, i couldn't find an apartment with them. now that i have a fabulous set of my very own and want to move with them, i cannot find an apartment without them.

5. because my company builds apartments (and its a shame that i cannot have one of them), i suspect that i ask leasing agents very annoying questions when i am visiting new apartments

6. isn't this a lovely floor plan:

7. we are picking up a big huge truck next week. i hope my husband can drive it...

8. i didn't start packing until tonight. *fret*

9. thankfully my parents are coming this weekend. they aren't union so i'm putting them to work round the clock.

10. my new apartment complex has a fitness center and i pinky swear that i'll work out more often

11. i don't even like to swim but i can't wait to lounge by here:

12. we are moving between christmas and new years. i think that must be about the most inconvenient time EVER to move.

13. i just can't wait! we are going to start a new life in a new place and i just can't wait!

from the office that only has a week of life left:

there are actually several more people who work in the building, but these are just the people who work for my company and are in my building.

i don't know how i got pushed to the front or why the tree topper is so sad looking (ok i do know that last one, its a billion years old. all the decorations have been goodwilled to us by various employees who were tired of them being on their own trees; the tree actually contains one of the uglies assortments of ornaments in existence. we really should call the ripley's people).

home sweet las vegas

we have an apartment! we were out in vegas this past weekend to prepare for the move. andrew and i signed a lease, explored unlv, found nellis, visited some comic shops, and ate an in-n-out burger. throughout the weekend, there were a couple of things that we couldn't seem to find in town. then we found nellis airforce base. thank goodness for the DOD, they've come through for us. the only capt'n d's in town is on base, and i think the only place you can by any decent bourbon is in the little shoppette by the px. we're saved from a fate of no woodford reserve or quality fish grease. hooray!

rest in peace, my evil mr kitty

thirteen things about mr. kitty
week #16

there's isn't too much to introduce this time. for no particular reason, i haven't mentioned my cat too much here. i guess better late than never. this week was a hard one.

mephistocat: 4/8/2000 - 10/4/2006

1. my fat cat was a gift. while i didn't get to take him home then, i choose him when he was just days old.

2. his official name was mephistocat. before i got to take him home, in the summer of 2000, i visited new orleans. there was a fabulous shoe store named mephistopheles. marlow tells us that faust sold his soul to mephistopheles, the devil. mephisto is short for that and as a cat, it's mephistocat. he's really lived up to his name. but then my husband came along and it was just mr. kitty after that.

3. mr. kitty's mom was short haired. he's dad was a local tom, long haired. mr. kitty was quite tubby, as all good kitty's should be, but his only long hair was also on his tummy, making him look extra fat. hee hee.

4. he wasn't my cat. i was his person. if you have a cat, you understand the difference.

5. mr. kitty dressed up for christmas fun:

6. mr. kitty was terribly fond of licking elbows. i can't tell you how many times i would wake up in the night because he was licking my elbow. i took to wearing long sleeved shirts to bed because of this. so very weird.

7.

8. as you can see from the picture above, mr. kitty's favorite toy was the green string. we bought toy after toy but he nabbed a string from a green sweatshirt and never really took to anything else.

9. mr. kitty also loved to eat the houseplants. in his mind, he was clever and sneaky. would wander up to the plant. stand near it. look at me. inch closer. yawn. during the yawn, a bit of plant might accidentally fall into his mouth. clearly, the plant wanted to be eaten, it was out of his control.

10. who among us can't spend hours playing in a box?

11. mr. kitty had a nack for ruining important things. he soiled a suitcase, a box of dvds (most in the cardboard boxes which are remarkably absorbent), and one of andrew's army hats (only a couple of hours before deployment).

12. going along with #12, mr. kitty hated andrew. with a fiery fiery passion. the funniest thing that ever happened, i didn't even get to witness. i don't remember what the scuffuffle was over. i imagine it was over who got to sit on the couch or can andrew make the bed without the cat being inside it or something. but mr. kitty got just so so very mad that he accidentally pooed ON HIMSELF. in the same way that small children might laugh until they accidentally wet themselves. mr. kitty was just so mad and then so stunned and then so ashamed/embarrassed and then he ran off, as i guess i would too if i'd just done that. ha ha ha.

13. mr. kitty passed out after a night of too much fun:

wild hair

i woke up one day last week and decided to cut all my hair off. does anyone else out there do that? three years ago i woke up and decided to grow my hair out. it was officially long hair a couple of months ago. i'm now tired of picking 18 inch hairs off my sweater, pillow, couch, husband, and most the importantly shower drain. so just at the moment its long, i want short hair. the picture is a bit fuzzy, as it was taken in the bathroom with my camera phone, but here is it...ta da

leftover turkey fun

meant to post this earlier...
